Microsoft’s 343 Industries announced that it will retire Halo gaming services for Xbox 360 in about a year, in December 2001.

“Here at 343 Industries, our teams are fully focused on the future of Halo,” explains a new post from the game studio. “To date, we have juggled work and priorities going forward with continuing to maintain Halo’s legacy Xbox 360 services. Maintaining these legacy services today requires a significant amount of time and resources, directly impacting the studio’s ability to support current and future projects such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite. “

For this reason, 343 now plans to retire its Halo gaming services for Xbox 360 sometime in December 2021, roughly a year from now. But it will do so over time in phases. According to the study, phase one occurred more than a year ago, when it migrated more than 6 million pieces of user-generated Halo Xbox 360 legacy data to Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Today, we’re in phase two, which includes alerting players to the rest of the schedule and stopping digital sales of Halo games on Xbox 360 (although digital sales of downloadable content, or DLC, will continue on that platform).

Phase three involves ongoing messages about pending retirement during 2021. And in phase four, it all comes to an end when the legacy Halo services for Xbox 360 will be shut down.

The shutdown will affect all major Halo titles released on Xbox 360, including Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, Halo: Reach, and Halo Wars, plus Halo Spartan Assault. And Microsoft notes that anyone who owns these titles will be able to access and play them after services have been disabled, with the understanding that some experiences and functionality will be reduced or removed.

Closure makes no It will impact any of the games in the Halo: The Master Chief Collection, or Halo Wars: Definitive Edition series.
