The Amhara Regional State Police announced that it is asking the federal government for authorization to protect ethnic Amharas and other ethnic groups in the Benishangul Gumuz regional state from rebels.

Speaking to The Reporter, Amhara Regional State Police Commissioner Abere Adamu reaffirmed the readiness of the regional police force to go into operation in the Benishagul region if the federal government is busy handling other matters.

“When a regional state fails to protect the safety of citizens, the federal government is responsible for acting,” Abere said, emphasizing the need to maintain the rule of law in the area where killings occur.

“The causes of the problem are the remains of the TPLF who cry with us during the daytime meetings but are unable to stop the killing of innocent civilians at night,” said the commissioner, speaking of the meetings held with officials from the Benishangul region. .

“What we can do as a regional state is appeal to the federal government, but I can still assure you that we are ready and willing to protect the public from harm and we do not have a capacity problem,” said the Police Commissioner. he told The Reporter.

The prosperity party leaders of the Benishangul and Amhara regions are deliberating on the issue, Abere said, hoping for a lasting solution.

It has been months since the country began to witness the horrific killings of innocent civilians in the Metekel Zone.

Since then, members of parliament, opposition politicians and other prominent figures have described the incident as ethnically motivated and demanded that the government intervene immediately.
