WhatsApp launches voice and video calls to some desktop users: report

[ad_1]

WhatsApp seems to have started implementing voice and video calls to target desktop users. This will allow users to make WhatsApp calls directly through their desktops. Until now, voice and video calls were limited to the WhatsApp application for mobile devices. However, some recent reports suggested developing WhatsApp calling for your desktop and web clients. The latest update is currently in beta, and its implementation is fairly limited in nature, according to a report.

Some users of the WhatsApp desktop client have started to see voice and video call buttons in the chat header, reports WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo. Some users also tweeted about the arrival of the new update.

Although WhatsApp is gearing up to bring voice and video calls to both desktop and web users, the initial rollout appears to take precedence for the messaging platform’s desktop client.

Gadgets 360 has reached out to WhatsApp to clarify the launch. This report will be updated when the company responds.

References to the new release were seen in version 2.2043.7 of the WhatsApp web client in October. Recently, it was discovered that WhatsApp had tagged video and voice call buttons with a “beta” tag. This could be to highlight that the new experience is currently in a testing phase.

Users who have received WhatsApp calling features on their desktops should be able to make and receive voice and video calls from within the application. The screenshots shared by WABetaInfo show that a pop-up window will appear allowing you to accept or decline an incoming call on your desktop. Similarly, WhatsApp will display the current call status through another pop-up window.

It is important to note that while the calls will be made through your desktop, you will still need your phone to be connected to the WhatsApp desktop application to allow communication. This is how you access messages through WhatsApp’s web and desktop clients.

That being said, the new arrival will allow you to use high-quality high-definition webcams and microphones to make WhatsApp calls.

WhatsApp introduced its voice calling feature on mobile devices in February 2015 and brought the ability to make video calls in November 2016. Both additions have made the Facebook-owned messaging app a stronger competitor to Google Hangouts, Skype and FaceTime.
