Android smartphones that have Qualcomm SoC from the new 888 mobile platform onwards will receive three OS version updates in addition to the version that comes with the device, under a new agreement with Google.
Qualcomm said in a statement that it had made a deal with Google to extend its Treble Project so that more devices that were built on Qualcomm SoCs could run the latest versions of Android.
New releases from Google typically arrive on its Pixel phones shortly after their announcement. Then the various OEMs that use Android on their devices (Samsung, OPPO, OnePlus and others) are left to choose the new version, modify it as needed, and provide updates to their users. Virtually all OEMs do some mods, and hardly anyone uses stock Android like the Pixel does.
Sometimes this takes a long time – Samsung recently Announced an Android 11 update three months after Google released it, and sometimes there might not be an update.
In addition to operating system updates, Qualcomm said that from now on it would support four years of security updates starting with the new 888 mobile platform.
“These initiatives are designed to enable faster updates to the Android operating system with fewer resources and a predictable software lifecycle for Snapdragon-based devices, which together are expected to result in more consumers with Snapdragon-based devices. with the latest version of the Android operating system, “said Qualcomm.
David Burke, vice president of Android engineering at Google, said the company continued to work closely with its technology partners to increase the freshness of the Android ecosystem.
“Through this collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, we hope that Android users will have the latest operating system updates and increased security on their devices,” he added.
Kedar Kondap, Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, said: “We are excited to work with Google to expand our support for the Android operating system and security updates on future Snapdragon mobile platforms that use Project Treble enhancements.
“Through this collaboration, we expect an accelerated update of the Android operating system on Snapdragon-based devices while providing a superior user experience for end users.”
