What you get from the special research ‘Distracted by something shiny’

There was a brief moment in Pokemon GO, last night, when I had no active special investigation. A clean slate, so to speak, after I finished my last bit of the December Community Day event. I guess there will be no rest for the wicked, because we have a new special investigation this morning as part of the “Secrets of the Jungle” event. And this time around, it’s hosted by none other than Jesse and James from Team Rocket, which gives it a bit more flavor than we’d get in a standard Professor Willow quest. This is what you get from the special investigation “Distracted by something shiny”

The grand prize here is a Shiny Celebi, as announced by Niantic over the weekend and highly indicated by the fact that “shiny” is there in the research title. For the full steps and rewards, check out Leek Duck, but it’s pretty standard stuff. Aside from some modestly rare spawns, the only real premium item is a Poffin that you get in the second step. The real prize comes at the end, of course.

It’s kind of a fun reward, really. Until today, having a mythical glitter would have been one of the most valuable prizes in the game, even if they are not eligible to trade. Now, though, everyone’s getting one – it’s still fun and it’s still a nice little thing in your collection, but not exactly a display piece. But maybe it will still do its job?

The event is a marketing thing for Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, part of the ever-wide world of Pokemon anime that I must confess I’m not really aware of. But from the announcement, it looks like Shiny Celebi will be featured prominently, as will Jesse and James.

There’s a ton of other bonuses going live now too, including Shiny Rufflet’s casting and Rufflet’s appearing in 1-star raids, which I think marks our easiest route to catching one yet. “Explorer Pickachu”, with a big hat, is now also live and will appear in the hour of attention tomorrow. For the rest of the spawns, raids, eggs, and more, check out Silph Road for all the details.
