Apple’s new iPhone 12 range is suffering from various problems, but the worst has now spread to many more iPhone models.

First reported as a predominantly iPhone 12-only issue by MacRumors last month, users have now flooded MacRumors’ own forum (22 pages, 1,000+ posts) and Apple’s Support Communities (44 pages, more than 5,000 affected) confirming all compatible with iOS 14 iPhones are potentially at risk of widespread SMS messaging problems. These problems are also spreading to other popular third-party messaging apps like Signal and WhatsApp.
The problems range from the inability to send or receive messages to the lack of notifications. Additionally, the severity varies with some users receiving occasional notifications but missing others, while the worst hit have no messaging capabilities at all. User reaction is understandably heated, especially by Apple’s continued silence.
“This is honestly ridiculous. Weeks have passed. If someone replies to a message that I send right away, I will hardly ever see the reply … I’ve seen a lot of annoying errors over the years, but nothing like missing messages. Terrible. “- source
“I’ve been reading a lot of posts and I see that some of us have investigated the problem with Apple support and we have case numbers. When I was on my (second) extended call with Apple support, I mentioned the thread here with, at the time, more than 90 thousand visits (now more than 100 thousand). “- source
“@AppleSupport @Verizon 12 Pro Max cannot receive or send SMS messages. Replaced the phone at the Verizon store. Verizon says it’s Apple. Apple says it’s Verizon. What’s going on?” – source

@AppleSupport … I’m in the exact same situation as the thousands of customers who complained on your forums this week. It is a key feature. It’s not a glitch in an accessory function, it’s almost vital. We can sue for this! “- source
“Mine is getting worse and worse, now I’m also missing calls and notifications from other apps. He went to the Apple store where he said that he had not heard from anyone who had the problem and they replaced the phone … every day I receive less than the day before, but now also calls, making things almost impossible. “- source
“I just got off the phone with one of their senior advisers and she told me that the engineering team wanted to replicate the problem and then run diagnostics… The first time they blamed my SIM card. I told him how can this be since we are many, from different companies and probably from different countries. He also said that the engineering team does not attach much importance to these discussions. She said she couldn’t even verify if they read these. The engineers saw this link to our discussion, but she’s not sure they bothered to read it. He couldn’t even tell me if the fix was in the next update! ” – source

Apple didn’t respond to my requests for comment when I first wrote about it, but with so many reports now flooding forums and tech support, it seems like the company can’t ignore this for much longer. I have contacted Apple again and will update this article when I receive a response.
Meanwhile, all the attention is on iOS 14.3, which will be released as early as this week. Affected users say beta versions haven’t fixed the flaw, but I suspect there is still time for Apple to tighten a fix if the pressure continues to mount.
