Kenya’s Ministry of Health reported 673 new COVID-19 infections on Friday out of a sample size of 8,230 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s total number of cases to 90,978.
In the same period, 14 new COVID-19-related deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,582.
Kenya is one of seven countries in Africa that have recorded more than 90,000 cases of COVID-19.
Its number of infections is only overshadowed by figures reported by South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Tunisia.
The East African country continues to see a steady increase in its number of cases, as fears mount about a possible increase in the number of new infections daily during the holiday period.
Stakeholders have urged the government to impose stricter measures in an effort to curb the rise in new cases as the year ends. Many Kenyans often travel to the interior of the country for family functions, while others travel to tourist destinations during December.
Containment measures currently in place include a nationwide night curfew, a ban on large public gatherings, and an order for the mandatory use of face covers in public.
