On November 4, 2020, TPLF forces attacked various Ethiopian Defense Force Northern Command bases killing hundreds of soldiers and wounding others. Thousands of soldiers were detained after being besieged in unsuspecting circumstances. It was a “preemptive strike” for the TPLF forces.
Private Sultan Adem was a member of the 7th Mechanized Division of the Northern Command. The division’s forces commander, Colonel Gere Gebremariam, had all the information about the planned attack and it was presumably part of the plot. The rest of the army in his division had no knowledge of what was going to happen.
Later they heard gunshots and were told that they were besieged by TPLF forces. After three days, without food or water, Colonel Gere convinced the army to fetch water, but requested escorts.
He returned with water but those who were escorting him were arrested. It was after that that Colonel Gere tried to persuade the division to disarm and surrender to the TPLF forces. “I don’t want any member of the division to lose their lives. Other divisions, including the Mechanized Artillery Division, have disarmed and surrendered weapons. We are the only division that did not disarm, ”he said. “No” was the answer he got. “We would rather die than disarm,” they told the commander.
When the soldier left the Division’s premises to assess the situation outside, they realized that they were under total siege with heavy weaponry, including tanks. And they were forced to disarm. After surrendering their weapons, the soldiers were taken to Shiraro and then to Akusm, Abi Adi, and Quiha. They were forced to walk hundreds of kilometers.
“Then we heard a funny fire,” remembers Private Sultan. When the Ethiopian Defense Force comes to their rescue, TPLF forces run over several soldiers with Chinese trucks and tanks.
The Sultan soldier had the opportunity to escape, but only to be captured by the TPLF militia forces who took all his belongings, including 11,000 Ethiopian birr.
