HE Ambassador Redwan Hussien, and the Commissioner for Disaster Risk Management HE Mitiku Kasa gave a briefing today (December 08) to the media on the current situation in Tigray, particularly on humanitarian assistance activities in the region .
Ambassador Redwan reiterated that the government is in the last phase of its police operation that prioritizes the restoration of infrastructure and the rehabilitation of affected people.
The hideouts of the TPLF criminals have already been identified and their apprehension would materialize soon, the ambassador added.
He also spoke about the complaints of some aid agencies and the media for not having easy access to the region and the presence of some bottlenecks on related issues.
Ambassador Redwan said that all people, including humanitarian agencies, must align their operations with the instructions given by the federal government on the rules of operation in the region, not only out of respect for the sovereignty of the country but also for their own security. .
Mitiku Kasa, for his part, referred to the ongoing humanitarian assistance in the region with special emphasis on coordination mechanisms between government organizations and non-government aid agencies.
He said the government is implementing the humanitarian assistance project by forming about 10 cluster agreements that coordinate government and non-government agencies based on the type of assistance people need in Tigray.
According to Mitiku, the arrangements include, among others, groups on agriculture and livestock, water and sanitation, health, nutrition, food and non-food items, logistics, women and children.
Humanitarian assistance begins with already vulnerable people who were recipients of aid even before the start of the law enforcement operation in Tigray, he said.
However, he said, people in need of humanitarian support and other locations in Tigray would be identified with the cooperation of the interim government in Tigray.
Finally, he stressed that aid agencies must cooperate with the government-led humanitarian support program for many reasons, including the country’s rich experience in handling these problems during droughts, conflicts, floods and other disasters.
