It’s official. Breakdancing is an Olympic sport and we will see it reflected as such for the foreseeable future.

The International Olympic Committee has added Breakdancing to the 2024 Paris Olympics. It will be called “breaking”, which was the original name used by dancers in the 1970s.

According to TMZ, the competition will feature “16 b-boys and 16 b-girls from around the world competing in one-on-one battles.”

Proposed by the Paris organizers after tryouts at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, it will join the 3v3 basketball and sport climbing competitions at Place de la Concorde in Paris.

In addition, it has been confirmed that skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing will also be added to the Paris Games. All three sports will make their Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, which was postponed a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Tokyo Games will open on July 23, 2021.

In a statement, the president of the World DanceSport Federation, Shawn Tay, spoke about the seriousness of this announcement.

“It was a real team effort to get to this moment and we will redouble our efforts in the run-up to the Olympics to ensure that the breakout competition in Paris 2024 is unforgettable,” he said.
