Spotify is working to add support for local music playback on Android, according to an insider. Notable reverse engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong said the Spotify app on Android will soon have support for local files or on the device. A screenshot shows a switch that can be enabled for ‘Show device files’. Spotify users will not need to sync from the desktop to play locally stored music on the phone. So far it is not clear if this feature will be limited to Spotify Premium users or if it will be implemented for free users as well.
The latest feature of Spotify is being tested for Android right now, according Jane Manchun Wong. She said that she was not aware of the feature that was being tested for the iOS app as of yet.
The switch under the Spotify settings, as seen in the screenshot shared by Jane Manchun Wong, gives users the option to turn on the ‘Show device files’ option. This will display all the audio files that are on the user’s device in Your Library. It looks like the app will scan your phone for audio files that have been saved and then display them in the Your Library section of the app.
To listen to locally downloaded files, Spotify users currently need to log into their accounts on the mobile app, as well as Spotify on the desktop. They must also be synchronized on the same local network.
Since the feature is only being tested at the moment, it could take a while before it’s released to a wider audience. This feature will bring the popular music streaming app to YouTube Music, which allows users to play locally stored files and uploaded songs.
Spotify has also recently started rolling out a Stories feature on Android and iOS for a limited group of artists. Through this, users will be able to share video clips containing song snippets and album covers, as well as snippets from their playlists.
