Archbishop Abune Gabriel passed away on Saturday at his residence at the patriarchate in Addis Ababa, according to sources from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
He served as Archbishop of the Diocese of Sidama, Gedeo and Burji in his last position. He had not been in compliance since October this year due to an unspecified illness.
Prior to his service in the aforementioned diocese, he has served in different dioceses, including Eritrea (before it was separated from Ethiopia), Jerusalem, and North America, among others. He was ordained archbishop in 1979 under the third patriarch, Abune Teklehaymanot.
He studied theology in Russia and the United States and has a doctorate. Graduated in Christology.
He will be interred at the Menbere Tsebaot Kidist Selassie (Trinity Cathedral) in Addis Ababa on Sunday starting at 10:00 am
