YouTube Music follows in the footsteps of Spotify with a series of year-long reviewed music playlists, including a custom list for subscribers.
Youtube Music is taking a book page out of Spotify and other music streaming services by implementing a ‘My year in review‘playlist for subscribers. Spotify Wrapped The feature has proven popular on social media to display songs and artists that users have listened to over the past twelve months. YouTube Music seems to want to get in on the action of remembering the playlist, launching a feature of its own to combine.
Now that it is Google’s only music streaming service, following the end of Google Play Music earlier this week, YouTube Music will be tasked with competing with other services such as Spotify, Tidal, and Apple Music, among others. The five-year-old service has a few tricks up its sleeve, such as its handy ability to open the corresponding music video to pair it with the song currently playing. With such a popular feature as year-end playlists, sometimes a little knockoff doesn’t hurt.
Although Google or YouTube Music has not yet officially announced it, Year in review The playlists have started to be distributed. In a section of the YouTube Music home screen titled Songs of the year a custom annual review playlist will be available along with some Top songs of 2020 Playlists sorted by genre. There’s also a Top songs of 2020 Playlist with hits like Roddy Rich’s The Box and Cardi B’s WAP among the calendar year charts.
How ‘My Year In Review’ And Spotify Wrapped Compare

That is not necessarily a bad thing; After all, the main purpose of these types of functions is to show all the music that users listened to the most throughout the year. While it is not revealed how exactly these songs are ranked in the playlist, YouTube Music seems to do so in a very practical way. Spotify Wrapped, meanwhile, is more like an interactive experience. Available on the Spotify home screen, by tapping the tab labeled “See how you heard in 2020“takes users to a slideshow that details various statistics on how they listened that year, from the number of new artists they discovered to their top genres based on their listening habits. Every part of the story involved can also be shared, which that allows users to showcase features like their best podcasts of the year on social media and invite peer discussion.
It might not be a fair comparison, as YouTube Music’s annual review playlists are still in their infancy, while Spotify Wrapped has been an anticipated part of the end of the year for some time now. However, YouTube Music has taken an important step in the right direction by doing what Google Play Music never did: collect all of its users’ favorite songs to listen to one more time before the year is out. Maybe YouTube Music will add a little more spice to the feature next year, but in the meantime, it’s a start.
