The warnings about Apple’s new iPhone 12 range are starting to mount. In the wake of concerns about screen irregularities and widespread signal drops, owners are now reporting serious battery issues.
Picked up by AppleInsider, thousands of users are talking about dramatic battery drain when their new iPhones are on standby. While the actual download rate varies (4-15% per hour), based on feedback from the Apple support communities, Reddit, and Twitter, the problem can affect all iPhone 12 models and there is currently no solution.
“I’m an engineer working in the mobile telecommunications industry and the download rate currently seen on my iPhone 12 is a flawed curve,” says an affected user who notes that he has a history of working with Apple on bug reports .
Illustrating his point in two graphs (see below), the engineer explains: “Please check both curves, at the top you can see a drain regardless of using the phone during the day or night AND despite the low mode consumption. Any engineer can tell you that this is abnormal behavior. At the bottom you will see a ‘normal’ discharge curve, where you can clearly see that it is not a straight line downhill, but depends on the use etc. “
Users report that battery drain can be so high that an iPhone 12 Pro can lose 50% charge overnight whereas an iPhone 12 Mini can be completely downloaded. Most commonly, affected users see a 20-30% drop overnight.
So far, attempts to isolate the problem have fallen short, with users disabling mobile data, GPS, WiFi, email, and even factory reset to no avail. Interestingly, a user reports that simply having a SIM installed causes your iPhone 12 Pro’s battery to drop drastically and removing it stopped the drain.
This suggests a potential problem with the modem, but the sample size is too small to know for sure. It is also unknown at this stage if this is a problem that can be fixed by a software update or if faulty iPhones need to be returned. While thousands of users have confirmed that they are suffering from the problem, it also remains to be seen how widespread this is as iPhone 12 models have already sold by the millions. Either way, however, it is clearly a major problem.
At the time of publication, Apple has not responded to my request for comment. I will update this post if that changes.
As it stands, there is no denying that the iPhone 12 range is hugely impressive and the performance in particular is ballistic. That said, there are clearly initial issues, so if you’re rushing to upgrade to an iPhone 12, it might be a smart move to wait for now and give Apple time to smooth things over.
