Lionel Messi has been fined $ 725 for his tribute to Diego Maradona after scoring in FC Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Osasuna on Sunday.
The Argentine removed his jersey after scoring his goal to reveal a Newell’s Old Boys jersey with Maradona’s number 10 on the back. Both Messi and Maradona have previously played for the Rosario club.
Messi received a yellow card for his tribute of the day, and on Wednesday he was sanctioned with the € 600 fine, according to TMZ. Barcelona may also have to pay € 3,000 ($ 3,600), reports The Independent.
Maradona, considered one of the best soccer players in history, died on November 25 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Buenos Aires.
Messi has long been compared to the late star, and he even played for him when Maradona was the coach of Argentina’s national soccer team from 2008 to 2010.
After his death, Messi shared a heartfelt message on social media.
“A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal,” he wrote.
“I keep all the beautiful moments that I lived with him and wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”
