Gamers prefer single player games, based on internal Sony data

Despite the enormous popularity of online multiplayer games, a leaked report from Sony seems to suggest that gamers prefer single-player games.

This is according to documentation distributed by Sony to developers in 2019, obtained by Vice, which features internal tracking data showing that PlayStation 4 users spend more time playing offline games compared to online modes. “The single player mode is thriving,” Sony said at the presentation.

The company’s research also noted that the single-player gaming experience came with its caveats, with gamers pointing to four key issues:

  • “I have no idea how much time it might take, don’t play unless you have more than 2 hours to spare”
  • “It takes a long time to scan long help videos when it gets stuck”
  • “How to interact socially without risk of spoilers”
  • “I forgot what I was doing in this game last time, it’s hard to get back in”

“Actually, most people have jobs. Or children. Or at school. Or all of the above, ”Sony added. “Often times, free time is wedged in between other obligations. One hour before going to bed. A 30 minute break between assigned tasks. A few minutes before your connection [multiplayer] match.”

It appears that the data likely played a role in the creation of the PlayStation 5 Activities feature, which allows users to quickly access specific stages, missions, and locations for a given game. The feature was designed to “remove barriers to gaming,” according to Sony, when it was first announced.

The PS5 officially launched last month and has since become Sony’s biggest console launch. In a brilliant five-star review, NMEJordan Oloman described the PS5 as a console that “feels like the true next-gen experience,” thanks to the “haptic wonderland of the DualSense.” [controller]”.
