So far, a crowdfunding campaign has raised about $ 8,000 for the grieving family of a heroic Perth teenager who drowned while saving his cousin.

Matiyas Bekuretsion, 16, was swimming with three other teens at Scarborough Beach shortly after 8 pm on Nov. 23 when they “got into trouble” and was unable to return to shore.

An exhaustive search was launched and a member of the public found his remains on nearby Trigg Beach less than two days later.

Matiyas moved to Perth almost three years ago to live with relatives, but her mother, Zufan Mebrahtu, remains in Ethiopia and the family is trying to bring her to Australia.

Hannah Gebrat has organized a Go Fund Me page, which also aims to cover the cost of Matiyas’ funeral.

“Matiyas, her cousin and family friends went swimming after the celebratory exams,” he said.

“Unfortunately, they got caught in a tear and started fighting. Two of them, including Matiyas, managed to swim out of the rip.

However, his cousin was still caught in the tear. Matiyas saw this and heroically returned to help her cousin.

They were both struggling to get back and then he plunged into the water with his last breath and lifted his cousin. Then she was saved by a local. “

Ms. Gebrat said that Matiyas was an “extremely selfless and kind child.”

“Brave and heroic, and he did not pass away in vain,” he said.

“He was extremely bright and intelligent, and had high aspirations to become a doctor in the future.

“He is very loved by all his family and friends.”

After the search turned into a recovery mission, Matiyas’ Devastated uncle and pastor Tesfaye Mebratu told NCA NewsWire that Matiyas was “a really good boy” who had attended Mercy College and had an academic talent.

“He is kind, humble and friendly. He is strong in his faith, ”Pastor Mebratu said.

“He wanted to help the community wherever he went.”

The police are preparing a report for the coroner.
