Spotify stories should include music suggestions, not artist video messages

If you haven’t gotten over Twitter’s shaky Fleets launch, I have more “Stories” news for you. After social networks ranging from Facebook to LinkedIn have embraced this format, music streaming giant Spotify is testing the waters with the ephemeral image and video feature.

As a Twitter user TmarTn Note that if you search for the Christmas Hits playlist in the Spotify mobile app, you will see the Stories feature appear in the company logo. As you can see in the clip below, it is currently a collection of video messages from different artists.

This is not the first time that Spotify has experimented with this format. Last year, it gave access to some artists to share ideas about their music creation process through stories.

I think Stories on Spotify is not a bad idea. But I’m just not interested in seeing video posts from artists there; You could see them on Instagram. But if you could see the song recommendations of the people I follow on Spotify and tune in directly within the app, you would use the Stories feature.

To be clear, I’m not suggesting that Spotify Stories should be available to everyone in the current format. I don’t want to watch videos of people on a music streaming platform. Just let me see musical recommendations, both from artists and my friends.

The company already allows you to share a song on other social networks such as Snapchat and Instagram. If Spotify could also leverage its base of more than 300 million users to create connections between them and foster more organic music discovery, that could keep people glued to the app for longer.

Currently, it is possible to follow your friends and artists on Spotify. But you can only see what they are listening to in your desktop app. The Stories format can fill in that lack of deep social connections on the platform in a meaningful way. Spotify, if you are interested in this idea, have your people call my people.
