NAIROBI, Nov 29 (Reuters) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Sunday that hospitals in Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, are running out of supplies to care for the wounded, a day after that the government’s announced military operations were complete in the region.
A landmark hospital in the city lacks body bags for the dead and is running out of basic supplies such as gloves, the ICRC said in a statement. The situation in the city of 500,000 people was “quiet” on Sunday, he said.
The government has not said whether there were any casualties in its offensive to take the city on Saturday.
The claims of all sides are difficult to verify as telephone and Internet links to Tigray have been down and access is strictly controlled since the fighting began. (Reporting by Maggie Fick Edited by Frances Kerry)
