Ethiopia’s army launched an assault on the capital of the Tigray region in the northern part of the country on Saturday.

The chief of staff of the country’s army said that the government forces have taken control of the city of Mekele and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. posted a statement to Twitter saying that the military operations against the leaders of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front had “completed and ceased.”

The Ethiopian government has closed communications and limited access to the media throughout the region, making it difficult to verify their claims.

Earlier this week, the federal government issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the TPLF, warning that it would take “final action” to gain control of Mekele.

That ultimatum followed three weeks of unrest, including allegations that innocent civilians have been killed by federal forces, sending more than 40,000 civilians across the border into Sudan.
