In an interview published Saturday, Representative Denver Riggleman of Virginia criticized fellow Republicans for not accepting that President Trump lost the race for the White House to his Democratic rival Joseph R. Biden.
The outgoing congressman recently slammed his Republican colleagues amidst finding himself among a minority of Republicans in Congress to acknowledge that Biden won the presidential election, Forbes reported.
Riggleman said Republicans who refuse to acknowledge the results of the White House race are participants in a “massive charade” and “only make money for the 2024 election,” Forbes reported.
“They’re concerned about the committee assignments, they’re concerned about the team,” Riggleman said of Republicans on Capitol Hill loyal to Trump, according to the article posted online.
For weeks, Biden has been projected to win the presidential election, but Trump has not relented and is challenging the outcome with less than two months to go on inauguration day.
An updated tally kept by USA Today lists a total of 10 House Republicans, including Riggleman, who have acknowledged that Biden was elected president in the weeks after the race was called.
Mr. Riggleman, who represents Virginia’s fifth congressional district, which includes Charlottesville and parts of the south, lost his primaries to a Republican challenger and will step down in January.
He said that Republicans who remain on Hill can “cost their careers” by separating from Trump, and that “the race is more important than the facts, it’s that simple,” Forbes reported.
Rep. Elect Bob Good, Republican of Virginia, will take over from Riggleman when the 117th Congress meets in January. Democrats are poised to maintain control of the House, but Senate leadership remains at stake with Georgia’s two runoff elections set to take place on January 5.
