New Zealand paid tribute to Diego Maradona ahead of their Three Nations test match against Argentina on Saturday, with All Blacks captain Sam Cane putting a number 10 jersey on the field prior to kick-off.
As the All Blacks performed the Haka, Cane walked to the center of the field and placed the jersey, with Maradona’s name and number, in front of the Argentine players.
Several Argentine players nodded in recognition of the All Blacks’ gesture.
Maradona, arguably the best soccer player in history, died after suffering a heart attack in a house on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where he was recovering from a brain operation.
Three days of national mourning have been declared after Maradona’s death, while Napoli plans to rename their stadium in his honor. He was buried in a private ceremony on Thursday of last week after tens of thousands of fans lined up and paid their respects at his coffin earlier that day.
Pelé led the tributes to Maradona after the confirmation of his death, writing: “What sad news. I lost a great friend and the world lost a legend.
“There is still much to say, but for now, may God give strength to the family members. I hope that one day we can play soccer together in heaven.”
Lionel Messi, the best Argentine player of this generation, who played with Maradona at the 2010 World Cup, also paid his respects. “A very sad day for all Argentines and for football. He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal, “he wrote.” I keep all the beautiful moments I lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP ”.
