Van de Beek could give United the solution to an old problem
On a night when Manchester United produced one of their best performances of the season, it would take an exceptional individual performance to stand out, and that is what Donny van de Beek produced.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team secured a 4-1 win over their Champions League opponent Istanbul Basaksehir, and Van de Beek did not directly contribute to any of the four goals. However, it was his impressive work behind those revealing finishing touches to United’s silky attacking game that had fans and experts praising the Dutchman’s display.
He was never likely to be the man to score the goals as he started the game in a midfield two alongside Fred and behind a thrilling attacking quartet of Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani. However, his role in United’s preparation was crucial.
United spent much of the night controlling possession and trying to elude their Turkish opponents who seemed happy to sit in a deep block. This type of attack-on-defense situation has caused Solskjaer side problems in the past, with his often slow and methodical build-up game lacking the penetration needed to break these sides.
However, what Van de Beek provided from the middle was fewer touches and instead more quick, penetrating passes through the lines before Basaksehir’s defenders had time to anticipate the next move.
