The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a female passenger, allegedly carrying Rs 6 crore worth cocaine, on Monday in Mumbai airport. DRI officials said the woman, identified as Ellena Kasakatira, a citizen of Malawi, an East African country, had arrived from Addis Ababa to Mumbai via Dubai.

Talking to Hindustan Times, a senior DRI official said officials from the Mumbai zone unit had received specific intelligence on this woman. The woman was carrying a wheeled suitcase, which was examined in accordance with the provisions of the 1985 NDPS Act.
“During the examination, two packages wrapped in black carbon paper were found hidden in the special cavity made in the bag. Upon examination, each package was found to contain 500 grams of cocaine,” said the senior DRI official.

The woman was arrested under the relevant sections of the NDPS Act 1985 for drug possession and was brought before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate, Esplanade on Tuesday. He has been in preventive detention until December 7.
DRI officials said they have observed a shift in the modus operandi adopted by drug traffickers, from body concealment to meticulous concealment of luggage, posing new challenges for law enforcement agencies. DRI officials said this was the second cocaine seizure in a week.
