KenGen continues its geothermal development efforts with a focus on delivering an additional 83.3 MW in capacity through its Olkaria I Unit 6 geothermal project, as well as the Olkaria I geothermal plant upgrade and acquisition process underway for the 140 MW Olkaria VI geothermal project to be developed under a PPP structure.

Speaking at the Kenya Electricity Generating Company’s (KenGen) Energy Café grand opening, Managing Director and CEO Ms Rebecca Miano unveiled an ambitious renewable energy project. With the activities, the company is focused on supporting the Kenyan government’s economic growth agenda.

KenGen’s focus in the next 12 months is on the completion of its 83.3 MW geothermal development of the Olkaria I Unit 6 project. So far, the company has drilled more than 310 wells to support geothermal energy utilization in Kenya.

Procurement activities for the redevelopment of the Olkaria I geothermal plant aimed at increasing current capacity from 45 MW to 50 MW and extending its useful life by 25 years are in final stages. We report on the preselection of four companies for the implementation of a PPP for the development of the 140 MW Olkaria VI geothermal project.

However, the company continues to work on further development of hydroelectric, wind and natural gas power, but is also evaluating the feasibility of installing a municipal waste power generation plant.

KenGen also continues its business diversification efforts, with a focus on non-power generation revenue streams, including drilling, consulting, operations and maintenance, and training services leveraging its resources, primarily equipment and technical skills.
