Apple is preparing to launch a new iPad Pro line in 2021 with OLED displays, according to a report. The new lineup could follow next-gen iPad models that are rumored to come with mini-LED displays. OLED panels on iPad Pro models are expected to result in higher brightness and lower chances of burn-in problems. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that the iPad family would begin to switch to mini-LED displays in the first half of 2021. The iPad Pro models are likely to get the new treatment first, although it will likely be changed. gradually to other iPad versions as well.
Samsung Display and LG Display are currently developing a new OLED panel that will be featured on new iPad Pro models in the second half of 2021, TheElec reports. The existing iPad Pro line uses LCD panels that Apple calls a “Liquid Retina” display.
Samsung Display has reportedly revamped its production line to produce the new OLED displays for iPad. “The company was adding a distribution chamber to the source material deposition chamber to deposit red, green and blue together. This will allow the company to deposit an RGB layer, send the substrate to the front of the production line and stack an emitter layer on top, ”the report reads.
The new OLED structure is expected to allow two or three emitting layers to be stacked to improve the longevity of the display panel.
Like Samsung Display, LG Display is also busy preparing its new OLED panels for the next generation iPad Pro lineup.
Before switching to OLED, Apple could bring mini-LED displays to the iPad family. Various reports have suggested in the past that iPad mini-LED models could go into mass production in the coming months. While the iPad Pro line may switch to mini-LED displays first, Kuo in one of his notes to investors earlier this year mentioned that the new technology would also be part of the new iPad mini models.
TheElec report notes that Apple’s OLED adoption for the iPad Pro line could be delayed, depending on the “scale of adoption” of the mini-LED displays. He also mentions that the iPad Pro mini-LED could arrive as early as the first half of 2021.
