One of the best new features of the iPhone 12, as well as MagSafe and 5G, was the use of OLED displays across the range, even on the basic iPhone 12. That display technology is generally considered better than LCD, which many Apple products use, and now it looks like Apple’s new iPad Pro models for 2021 could make that leap, too.
This comes from a report written by The Elec, a Korean outlet, which states that the new iPad Pro for 2021 will come with an OLED screen; However, more than that, apparently this screen will be made by Samsung.
This particular OLED screen is said to be geared towards reducing screen wear and tear, which is when a screen can become discolored from heavy use.
OLED typically has better contrast and more striking colors than LCD, so this quality boost will be a treat for iPad Pro users who need higher color accuracy, such as photo or video editors.
As with all the pre-launch rumors, take this with a pinch of salt, because not only this information could change, according to the report, Apple could launch a different type of iPad Pro before the OLED.
An iPad Pro mini-LED
We’ve been hearing reports from Apple making an iPad Pro mini-LED for a while now; this would be a tablet with an LCD screen, but using mini-LED technology to compensate for many of the major problems with that screen technology.
The Elec seems to think that Apple could launch such an iPad Pro in the first half of 2021, before using OLED in the second half of the year.
This seems curious for two reasons. First, and most obviously, Apple probably wouldn’t want to release two lines of iPad Pro in one year; they would definitely compete with each other and confuse buyers. Maybe they are different sizes, let’s say the mini-LED tablet is 12.9 inches and the OLED is 11 inches, but that’s just speculation.
Second, the leaks had suggested that the mini-LED was the solution to the iPad Pro’s screen problems, giving the impression that this was the latest port of call in whiteboard display technology. However, this report seems to think that it’s just another stepping stone towards OLED, that Apple won’t stick around for long, which is contrary to what we’ve been hearing.
So instead of clarifying Apple’s iPad Pro plans, these leaks have made them a bit more confusing. To try and read this, we imagine that Apple is working on the OLED and mini-LED iPad Pro models, but only one type will hit the market, but that’s just a guess for now.
We’ll have to wait until the mentioned release times for these iPad Pro models to see what actually happens. As the dates approach, we will bring you the latest news and rumors, so stay tuned to TechRadar.
