Some Apple HomePod mini users are reporting Wi-Fi connectivity issues with the smart speaker, and the current suggested solution does not appear to be a permanent fix. The HomePod mini was announced in October and went on sale globally in November, including in India, where it is priced at Rs. 9,900. A smaller, more affordable version of the HomePod released in 2018, the HomePod mini uses Apple’s Siri voice assistant. Various smart speaker features are supported, including music streaming and custom responses.
The Wi-Fi connectivity issues, reported by 9to5Mac, have been detailed both in the company’s official support forum, and through posts on Reddit. Many users report similar issues to the original posts in both cases, where the HomePod mini responds with ‘I’m having trouble connecting to the internet’ when given a voice command. Following the troubleshooting steps, which suggest rebooting or resetting the speaker, only fixes the problem temporarily, after which the connectivity problem reappears.
Reddit users claim that the problem is limited to the HomePod mini, while other HomePod devices in the same home and connected to the same Wi-Fi connection work fine. When the speaker is controlled directly to stream music, there doesn’t seem to be a problem; the error only appears with voice commands and the HomePod mini does not respond to questions or requests made to Siri.
The lack of an official fix will be concerning for now, and a comment from a user on the forum suggests that Apple’s support staff doesn’t seem to have a fix for the problem yet either. This will likely require a firmware update to fix, but Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the issue. At the moment, the only solution seems to be the temporary one, where restarting the device makes it functional for a few hours.
