Biden Announces Several Key Cabinet Picks

US President-elect Joe Biden announced Monday to his key members of the foreign policy and national security team.

Biden appointed Antony Blinken as secretary of state, Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of Homeland Security (DHS) and Avril Haines as director of National Intelligence.

While Biden was Barack Obama’s vice president, Blinken served as undersecretary of state in 2015-2017 and deputy national security adviser in 2013-2015.

Born to Jewish parents, career diplomat Blinken also served as Biden’s national security adviser from 2009-2013.

While Linda Thomas-Greenfield will be the new US ambassador to the UN, Jake Sullivan is nominated as a national security adviser and John Kerry was chosen as the special presidential envoy for the climate charge.

Thomas-Greenfield, 67, has served as a foreign service officer in many American administrations since former President Ronald Reagan. She was Ambassador to Liberia in 2008-2012 and Under Secretary of State for African Affairs in 2013-2017.

The appointments marked the first in American politics.

Mayorkas will be the first Latino and immigrant as DHS secretary and Haines will be the first woman to lead the intelligence community. Sullivan will become one of the youngest national security advisers in decades, while Kerry will be the first presidential special envoy for climate to serve on the National Security Council.
