Apple’s annual selection of iPhone models has gotten a bit complicated, starting with just one through to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in 2014. This year, it has no fewer than four models to choose from, but it’s pretty clear which one is. better if you have money to spend. The iPhone 12 Pro Max includes everything Apple could fit into a phone and iFixit takes a good look inside to see if size matters in the end.
The teardown of the iPhone 12 mini demonstrated just how much tech Apple could fit into a tight space, but there are some things that can’t be made to fit without compromise. For example, the new standard wide camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max is advertised as having a 47% larger sensor. Compared to the iPhone 12, there is simply no way it will fit in a smaller body without shrinking other important parts.
Because you don’t have to worry about space, Apple can increase the size of other components. The tactical engine and speaker, for example, are almost gigantic compared to the iPhone 12 mini equivalents. On the other hand, you would have to wonder if Apple could have made room for even more things if it had stuck to the smaller parts.
Typically the battery falls short in those cases, but the iPhone 12 Pro Max thankfully doesn’t skimp on that. In fact, it is the only one of the four that sports the L-shaped battery that Apple has been using in recent years. Ironically, it still has less capacity than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but only slightly.
All in all, iPhone 12 Pro Max showcases the best of Apple technologies and design, right down to the ability to repair. It’s still a meager 6 out of 10, but luckily there are no surprises iFixit doesn’t know about yet.
