The Ethiopian Defense Force on Saturday controlled the city of Adigrat, the second largest city in the Tigray region, which is said to be of military importance.
Ethiopia’s state of emergency fact-checking team has confirmed the fall of Adigrat to the Ethiopian Defense Forces and the operation to control the city of Mekelle is underway.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed himself confirmed the capture of the city of Adigrat by the Defense Forces and expressed his admiration.
“The progress they have made the National Defense Forces of Ethiopia in the last days of our operation rule of law are commendable. Our forces have now completely liberated the city of Adigrat from the TPLF militia as of today. [Saturday], after checking the surrounding areas last night, ”he said in his status update.
People living in the cities controlled by the Ethiopian Defense Forces, including Adwa, Shire and Aksum, have returned to normal, according to Abiy Ahmed’s message. In addition, he told the people of the region and those who fled the region due to the war that his government is committed to helping them “resume their normal lives.”
He said that “the safety and general welfare of the people of Tigray is of the utmost importance to the federal government and we will do whatever is necessary to ensure that stability prevails in the Tigray region and that our citizens are free from harm and want. . . “
However, delivering humanitarian aid to the region could be a difficult task given that TPLF forces destroyed key infrastructure in the region when they withdrew to Mekelle.
Four major bridges along the road to Mekelle are destroyed, according to a state media report – EBC. Furthermore, the Ethiopian government announced that the TPLF destroyed the Emperor Yohannes IV airport that serves Aksum, a resort town that the Ethiopian Defense Forces controlled on Friday. Other credible sources report that the track is destroyed.
Report Mekele under siege
Reports from Ethiopia state that the Ethiopian Defense Forces controlled the main military center in the city of Qwiha, which is located about ten kilometers southeast of the city of Mekelle.
At the time of writing, the verification team made of the state of emergency in Ethiopia did not confirm the story.
Social media sources who claim to have information about the ongoing war claim that Qwiha is in fact under the control of the Ethiopian Defense Forces.
Additionally, Ethiopian Air Force helicopters dropped flyers from the Mekelle sky advising residents to take precautions, but again that is not confirmed by the emergency task force.
Mekelle-based TPLF media outlet Dimtsi Woyane did not report on the development on Saturday.
