Statement by Mr. Tahir Taghizade, Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom

On “Armenians see themselves as not fighting Azerbaijan but fighting Turks”

Armenia have been trying to portray this conflict as religious or connected to a whole third party to hide the root cause of the problem, which is the occupation of Armenia and the ethnic cleansing of Nagorno Karabakh and 7 adjacent districts of Azerbaijan. Furthermore, you cannot base your general regional or foreign policy on imaginary grievances against neighbors that emerge and further increase deep-rooted feelings of hatred and xenophobia.

On “mainly Armenian population of Nagorno-Karabakh”

Nagorno Karabakh is an internationally recognized integral part of Azerbaijan as stipulated in the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council (822, 853, 874, 884) of 1993.

The Armenian invasion of Nagorno Karabakh and 7 adjacent regions resulted in brutal massacres and ethnic cleansing against the Azerbaijani civilian population. More than 800,000 Azerbaijani civilians were forcibly expelled from these territories. Along with the 250,000 Azerbaijanis expelled from Armenia, the number of Azerbaijani refugees exceeds one million. Currently, Azerbaijan has the highest number of refugees per capita in the world. This is one of the reasons why Mr. Oborne observed that the population of Nagorno Karabakh was mainly Armenian. Furthermore, being ethnically populated by a certain minority does not necessarily mean a right to illegal secession.

On “being on the ground in Nagorno-Karabakh, killing civilians and mercenaries”

In the wake of its decade-long aggression against Azerbaijan, Armenia committed, among other things, genocide against more than 600 civilians in the city of Khojaly in Azerbaijan on February 26, 1992 and many other war crimes and crimes against humanity.

As a result of the most recent Armenian aggression against Azerbaijan, 94 civilians have been killed and 414 injured in deliberate attacks against civilians living far beyond the combat zone. Armenia launched two rocket attacks in the city of Ganja in the middle of the night and then in the city of Barda in Azerbaijan on October 11., 17 and 28 respectively, killing dozens of children, women and the elderly. In all these attacks, Armenia used banned Tochka-U, SCUD and Smerch missiles against innocent civilians. These reckless attacks by Armenia against civilians and civilian infrastructure amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch confirmed that Armenia used cluster munitions against Azerbaijani civilians.

As the President of Azerbaijan has repeatedly said, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan did not fight against civilians, including Azerbaijani citizens of Armenian origin, and did not attack. to civilians or to the civil infrastructure in the country. Occupied territories.

We recall that, according to public statements by senior Armenian officials, since the outbreak of hostilities, the majority of Armenians residing in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan have already left these territories for Armenia. The Azerbaijani side repeatedly asked those who remain in the area to stay away from military installations and to refrain from taking part in military hostilities, as this would hamper their status as civilians and turn them into combatants.

Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that Armenia extensively used mercenaries and foreign terrorist fighters in its military operations against the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, which have been widely documented, including by different international media and foreign governments, including those of Georgia and Canada.

Armenia, in an open attempt to cover up their aforementioned wrongdoings that constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity have been accusing Azerbaijan of the same in order to divert the attention of the international community, and for this they have been carrying out a massive fake news campaign.

We once again resolutely reject these baseless accusations and renew our appeals to the international community to be vigilant against the deliberate actions of Armenia to cover up its crimes through a smear campaign against Azerbaijan.

However, it is disappointing that the journalist consciously chose the “representative” of the illegal separatist regime established in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan as his main source of information.

Let us remind Mr. Oborne that the internationally accepted name of the city is Shusha, which was liberated from the Armenian occupation on November 8, 2020.

Last but not least; We would like to ask Mr. Oborne if he applied for Azerbaijan’s permission before visiting the Nagorno-Karabakh region in Azerbaijan. This is because any visit without the consent of the Republic of Azerbaijan to these territories, internationally recognized as an integral part of Azerbaijan, is considered a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan and a violation of national legislation. . as well as relevant norms and principles of international law: https://mfa.gov.az/en/content/401/travel-information#Health
