MOGADISHU, Somalia
The newly appointed Prime Minister of Somalia, Mohamed Roble, removed Foreign Minister Ahmed Awad on Thursday and replaced him with Mohamed Abdirizak, who served as former President Abdullahi Yusuf’s chief of staff.
Awad’s dismissal came hours after the Foreign Ministry issued an official statement on the situation in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia, calling for dialogue to end the deadly fighting there. Awad later dismissed the statement, saying it was “invalid” and did not represent the views of the Somali government.
In the statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the country promised to provide its full support “in the search to end the current situation in Ethiopia.”
On his official Twitter account, Awad responded to his dismissal by thanking the Somali president and the people of Somalia for the position he has held since 2018 and said: “I am not currently ready for any government post, ambassador or any other position. “
Somalia and Ethiopia have enjoyed buoyant and beneficial relations since Abiy Ahmed became Ethiopia’s prime minister in April 2018.
Mogadishu was one of the first capitals Abiy visited, meeting with the President of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo. At the meeting, Somalia and Ethiopia signed agreements on diplomatic, security and economic relations. The two leaders held lengthy meetings, renewing their two countries’ bilateral ties, which span generations.
