How to prevent Alexa from ruining gift surprises

Amazon’s smart voice assistant Alexa can automatically tell you what is being delivered if you have an Echo. It is useful if you want updates on a package, but sometimes it says too much.

For example, Alexa might say something like “A new PlayStation 5 has just been delivered” when your children are in the room.

If you want to keep the element of surprise in the holiday gifts that you request for other people, you can disable this feature in the Alexa app. This is what to do:

  • Open Alexa on your phone.
  • Press Settings.
  • Choose Notifications.
  • Select Amazon Shopping.
  • Uncheck the “For items in delivery updates” box in the “Let Alexa say or display the titles of the items you have ordered.”

You will also notice that there is an option to remove updates to your shopping cart items marked as gifts. This means that you can still receive updates on other packages, but this depends on you correctly marking the gifts when ordering. There are so many things that happen during the holidays, it might be safer to turn off all notifications in case you forget to mark something as a gift.
