Zoom adds tools to combat meeting interruption

Zoom has released two new security features that will allow meeting organizers to remove disruptive participants and allow other users to report them. The video conferencing software service also announced details of a tool it is using to scan social media and online for meeting links at risk of disruption.

Meeting hosts and co-hosts can now temporarily pause meetings while eliminating a disruptive participant. Clicking the Suspend Participant Activities feature will stop all video, audio, meeting chat, annotations, screen sharing, recording, and breakout rooms. Hosts and co-hosts then have the option to remove a user from the meeting and the Zoom Trust & Safety team is notified. Hosts can re-enable individual meeting features.

While this security feature is enabled by default for free and paid Zoom users, the host and co-hosts can also enable a feature that allows other meeting participants to report disruptive users.

Zoom Meeting at Risk Notifier, which scans the web for publicly shared Zoom Meeting links, automatically alerts account owners via email of meetings that are at high risk of disruption and provides advice on what to do . Stepcs could include deleting a vulnerable meeting and creating a new one with a new meeting ID, enabling security settings, or using another Zoom solution like Zoom Video Webinars or OnZoom’s Immersive Experiences Marketplace.

Earlier this year, the company announced other updates aimed at improving meeting security, including stronger encryption, enabling passwords by default, and a new hub for easy access to important security settings.
