Following today’s launch of the M1-powered Mac, Google has quietly released a Mac version of Chrome optimized for Apple Silicon.
To download, visit google.com/chrome and click the blue “Download” button. If you are using an M1 computer, you should have the option to select between “Mac with an Intel chip”, which is labeled “most common”, and “Mac with an Apple chip.”
This change on the installer page has yet to be fully implemented on all new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini devices. The new download message is shown below.
The Intel / x86 version already works thanks to Rosetta 2, but there should be more optimizations in this update aimed at the new processor.
Meanwhile, some users report that the Intel version of Chrome for Mac is updating automatically to the Apple Silicon variant. Since the latest version of Chrome was released later in the afternoon, some new Mac owners already downloaded the old version this morning. You can visit chrome: // settings / help to manually start the update process.
This Apple Silicon support is rolling out with Chrome 87, which features a host of other performance improvements. Namely, a 5x reduction in CPU usage and a 1.25 hour increase in battery life thanks to limiting background tabs. Google’s browser opens 25% faster, while page loads also see some speed improvements.
The latest version also features an app icon optimized for macOS 11 Big Sur. The Chrome logo is placed on a white rounded square background that best suits the design direction of the latest operating system. It also matches the Chrome icon for iOS.
