Some PS5 owners are playing the PS4 version of Call of Duty by mistake

If you own a PS5 and enjoy Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, take a moment and check that you are playing the PS5 version of the game. It looks like someone got it wrong and you may be playing the PS4 version.

As Eurogamer reports, the issue is not the fault of the gamers, it has to do with how Activision decided to release the game for Sony’s new console. By purchasing the Cross-Gen or Ultimate Edition bundle of the game, you get both the PS4 and PS5 versions. Then it is possible to “download all” the content to your PS5.

The side effect of selecting this option is that the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game download to your PS5. Then for some reason the PS5 by default launches the PS4 version of the game when you select to play. To prevent this from happening, tap on the three dots next to the play button and make sure the PS5 version is selected. Then you can enjoy much faster load times, full DualSense controller feedback, and 120fps output if your TV supports it.

Hopefully, Activision can quickly release a patch that allows the PS5 to default to the PS5 version of the game when all content is downloaded. It is also possible for owners to select to download only the PS5 version from the PlayStation Store and avoid the issue that way.

However, it’s not just PS5 owners who experience version issues with Black Ops Cold War. User KillKo commented on Eurogamer’s coverage of this issue, noting that if you buy the game on Xbox Series X, but don’t spend more on the Cross-Gen bundle, you don’t get the Series X version of the game. Fortunately, Microsoft has a good refund policy, so the problem can be easily fixed.
