Google has a useful tool for that. (Image created by Gargi Singh)

Last week, Google announced that Google Photos will no longer support the free unlimited high-quality storage policy. The change will take effect from June 1, 2021. Basically, starting from this date, all the high-quality photos and videos that you upload to Google Photos will be deducted from your Google Drive storage, which is a departure from the previous policy. Please note that photos and videos uploaded at the original resolution have already been posted to storage; The free policy was for high quality, express quality photos and videos.

For many Google Photos users, this news is definitely a disappointment, given that the service had become the default option for storing photos online without worrying about space. With the disappearance of the free storage option, if you were wondering how long your Google storage will last, the company has also announced a useful new tool. David Lieb, Product Lead at Google Photos, tweeted about the tool, which will give users an estimate of their storage quota.

Check out the tweet below

Users can access the tool at photos.google.com/storage. In our case, it shows that the storage will last more than four years, but this is a paid account. Remember that this estimate is based on how often you back up photos and videos, and how many devices are linked to the Google account where photos and videos are uploaded. If you’re constantly uploading photos and videos and you’re still on the free Google account, chances are you’ll run out of space quickly and need to upgrade to the paid option.

Google currently offers customers 15GB of free data storage, which accounts for Google Drive and Gmail, and Photos and Videos, which are uploaded to user accounts. For those who want more storage, they must order the Google One service and pay for additional storage.

Google Photos: What’s up with photo and video backups so far?

Google says they won’t count toward your Google account storage. Remember that this new change applies to photos and videos of high quality and express quality. If it was uploading with the original quality, then they already counted for the storage of the Google account.

Users with a Pixel device will continue to receive free unlimited storage for photos and videos Google also says that most users will not hit a limit for years, and will issue a reminder if a user needs to take action after June 1, 2021.

Google Photos storage estimation tool not working?

The page also explains that in some cases this tool may not display an estimate if

1. The user has not constantly uploaded content in recent months.

2. The user is either close to the storage quota limit or no longer has storage.

3. For accounts provided through work, school, family, or another group.

Google’s new storage management tool is coming

Lieb also tweeted that Google “will release some new tools that will make it easier to identify and remove content you don’t want to store.” The tool will presumably help identify dark, blurry photos, long videos, and more so the user can delete them.

Google says the tool will likely be available in June 2021 and will help users better manage their storage.

What happens when you cross the storage space after June 1, 2021?

If you run out of storage space in your Google account, you won’t be able to back up additional photos and videos after June 1, 2021. Google says that if the quota is exceeded for 24 months, your content may be affected.
