JERUSALEM: The Israeli army said it attacked Hamas positions on Sunday morning after a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip overnight.
Two rockets were fired into southern Israel from the Gaza Strip on Saturday night, the Israeli army said, although there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tweeted that they had “attacked Hamas underground infrastructure and military posts in Gaza.”
“The IDF is conducting an ongoing situation assessment and remains prepared to operate against any terrorist activity,” they added.
An army source told AFP in a WhatsApp message that fighter jets, helicopters and tanks were deployed.
Security sources in Gaza said there were several attacks during the night, including in Khan Younes, Rafah and Beit Hanoun, with no casualties reported.
Previous Israeli media had reported that rockets from Gaza landed on uninhabited areas, although a military spokeswoman could not confirm this.
The attack from Gaza, which has not been reported, comes days after the anniversary of the assassination of the leader of Islamic Jihad, Baha Abu Al-Ata, who was killed in an attack on his home in Gaza City on November 12 of the year. past.
Before the anniversary, the Israeli army was reported to be on high alert inside the Gaza Strip, where approximately two million Palestinians live.
