In news Sony is probably expecting it to be an isolated PS5 issue, we just learned of the first of their new consoles to die unexpectedly. And, yes, the PS5 is yet to come out, this is a review unit.
YouTube content creator Jeremy penter (aka ACG) shared the news online, and it sounds pretty bleak. What started as a storage error later led to problems with the console boot. And then, well, the whole system just died.
As Penter points out, I was working with Sony to try to repair the PS5, but the drive failed during troubleshooting. Unsurprisingly, this has hindered their plans to make videos, as the PS5 (along with the Xbox Series X) is everything console gamers want to talk about right now.
P.1. Right now my PS5 is 100% dead. I was having storage rebuild issues that others reported, but mine escalated to complete errors and network / boot issues. Sony and I were working on troubleshooting when it completely died. So right now I’ll be moving the content …November 10, 2020
Penter also posted a full video explaining what he knows about the disappearance of his PS5. He notes that “the hardware storage, the external storage, had weird issues when the system was coming out of sleep and sometimes it would just hang there, where it came out and say its storage is corrupted and we have to rebuild it.”
He also notes that he doesn’t think you’re having the same router-related issues that other YouTubers have reported.
As someone who hasn’t been able to pre-order a PS5 (and wasn’t eager to either), this seems like another risk of being an early adopter. As I said earlier, everyone (including those lucky enough to get the rare PS5 pre-order) is probably hoping this is an isolated issue and not something that goes mainstream.
That being said, we’ve also seen reports of Xbox Series X units overheating, including smoke coming from their top, like a little chimney you just spent $ 500 on.
In testing for our PS5 review and Xbox Series X review, we didn’t experience any of those bugs.
