Microsoft is reportedly approaching several “small to large” development studios in Japan with a view to adding to its own developer roster.
As reported by Bloomberg (Thank you, VGC), Microsoft seeks to take on Sony on its own turf by strengthening its position in Japan. While Nintendo reigns supreme and is unlikely to lose much ground to the Xbox Series XMicrosoft is reportedly trying to reposition itself ahead of rival Sony by beefing up its portfolio of studios.
While Bloomberg sources did not elaborate on the topic of the discussions or the results of the discussions, it is believed that one of the studies that he approached was Koei Tecmo. Bloomberg claims that company president Hisashi Koinuma stated that “if the US company shows continued interest in Japan,” it was open to releasing more Koei Tecmo games on the Xbox family of consoles.
“Xbox has a chance to make Japan its second-largest market after the United States if it takes the right steps in the next few years,” said Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at the Tokyo-based Ace Research Institute. “Sony’s attention is fading and fans have started to notice that.
“Microsoft will not be able to take Sony’s position as No. 2 [after Nintendo] in Japan soon, but at least it’s started to make changes. A great tide always begins with a small change. “
Jeremy Hinton, Xbox’s chief operating officer for Asia, declined to comment on potential acquisitions, but said Microsoft “is always open to discussions with creators who are a good fit.”
