If you haven’t managed to pre-order a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X yet, don’t worry. Do not worry. Do not worry Be Happy.
Okay, maybe not happy. For early adopters of shiny new devices, not being able to track one at launch can be daunting and frustrating. That could be even more pronounced thanks to everything that is happening in the world: a tense and divisive election here in the United States; the COVID-19 pandemic and resurgent shutdowns; probably an alien invasion or worse in the near future.
I get it. I’m not here to shake off your sadness. I am here to encourage you. There are very good reasons to wait when it comes to the newest toy. They may not ease all your problems, but they can ease the pain.
Let’s get started, shall we?
# 1 – The pitching lineup is pretty slim.
This isn’t to say that there aren’t many games available on PS5 or Xbox Series X at launch, just that some of these games will also be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
In other words, although the best version could It will only be available on PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can often find the current generation version and play it instead. In fact, some of these games are just current-gen game versions anyway.
In the meantime, if you get a current-gen version of a game and then purchase a next-gen system, there are often free (or very cheap) updates available. For example, if you get Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War On PS4 or Xbox One, you can upgrade to the next generation for $ 10, which is just the price of the next generation version ($ 69.99) to start with.
# 2 – Cyberpunk 2077 has been delayed. Again.
One of, if not the, the most anticipated games of the year are those of CDPR Cyberpunk 2077. Heading into the holiday season, the game would launch during the same week as PS5 and Xbox Series X.
But CD Projekt RED wanted to polish (heh) the game a bit more before launch so they delayed it for 3 weeks. Bad news, perhaps, for anyone who wants to play next week and certainly anyone lucky enough to get a PS5 or Xbox Series X.
Good news, on the other hand, as you now have an additional 21 days to get hold of a next-gen system. These will be released in waves, after all. It is very possible that a second wave will arrive before Cyberpunk 2077 comes out.
# 3 – Pre-orders are also delayed.
The fact is, just because you’ve pre-ordered for the PS5 or Xbox Series X doesn’t mean you’ll get it at launch. Several retailers delay many orders for an indefinite amount of time. So if you didn’t get one, you can take comfort in knowing that even getting one doesn’t actually mean getting one. If that makes any sense.
The point is, this is the type of product that you just have no control over. Even success can be bittersweet. Waiting until the dust settles is not such a bad idea, especially if you can adopt the right mindset where the whole process doesn’t stress you out. Do not worry Be Happy.
# 4 – They are likely just a draft.
So this is more for those players who might be a bit hesitant. Should you even get a next-gen system, let alone day one?
Well, if the last generation taught us anything, it is that waiting has its advantages. Not only will consoles get cheaper over time, both Sony and Microsoft released “mid-cycle” updates for their original PS4 and Xbox One consoles.
This mid-cycle update was pretty big too. Sony released a PS4 Slim that was smaller and more attractive to replace the original PS4, and it released a PS4 Pro that was considerably more powerful. Microsoft released the Xbox One S to replace the OG Xbox One, and it was a much more attractive console inside and out, and they released the very powerful Xbox One X.
Waiting for a mid-cycle update is not a terrible idea for anyone who is happy with their current systems. Also, by the time that happens, the industry will have largely moved to new platforms and most of the new games to come out will be next-gen only.
# 5 – Waiting might offer you a better deal, at least for an Xbox.
Well, have a “better deal” with a grain of salt. This won’t actually save you money on an Xbox Series X (or S), but it will save you money and spread the cost.
I mean the Xbox All Access program. Basically, you can finance the purchase of any of the consoles ($ 35 a month for Series X, $ 25 a month for Series S) and pay for it over the course of two years with no finance charges.
Better yet, this price includes Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which gives you Game Pass and Xbox Live With Gold. That gives you access to tons of games, online games, and xCloud game streaming (which allows you to play Xbox games on Android devices), all included in the monthly fee. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also includes PC, and it costs $ 15 a month on its own.
At this time, I don’t think there are any more All Access pre-orders available. I checked the Microsoft site and retailers and they are all out of stock and “Coming Soon”, although this could obviously change at any time after publication.
The point is, if you wait a bit, you might be able to get a next-gen Xbox through All Access. It won’t save you a lot of money, but it will spread the large investment over two years.
# 6 – Don’t forget about the Nintendo Switch.
Sure, it’s not as powerful or new as the upcoming Sony and Microsoft gaming systems, but Nintendo’s latest console is still great. And it is currently (more or less) in stock. I say something like because that seems to be changing daily. There was a long drought in which it was practically impossible to find one, but that is now over. Now the Nintendo Switch can be found in most retailers, although it does occasionally sell out.
And it has so many great games! The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Super Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing: New Horizons …The list goes on and on. It is a good alternative if you need something new to play.
They say that patience is a virtue. Above all, I agree. When it comes to getting the newest and brightest tech toys, patience is definitely a virtue. Virtue isn’t always fun, I get it, but it can save you money and stress you out at times. That is not so bad.
There are many good reasons to buy a next-gen console:Demon souls the remake on PS5 has ten of them, but if you can’t find one, don’t worry. They will be available soon enough.
And whatever you do, don’t pay resellers a penny more than the manufacturer’s suggested price. They’re a big part of the reason that pre-orders were so hard to come by in the first place.
