Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway on Thursday (local time) apologized to the limb difference community after her latest film ‘The Witches’ received a reaction online from the community.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the evil witches in the Warner Bros. movie, including the coven leader played by Anne Hathaway, are considered to only have three fingers.
The design of the fingers resembles ectrodactyly, also known as a split or cleft hand, which is a disability of the extremities.
Several social media users have objected to the rendering of the limb being so disrespectful as it was used to portray Hathaway’s character as non-human.
The ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ actor took to Instagram to share a video of the Luck Fin project with people with limb differences.
He went on to write a long caption dedicated to people with disabilities and apologized to the community for offending them with his film.
He began the note by saying that he always does his best to be “sensitive” to the feelings and experiences of others.
“I recently learned that many people with limb differences, especially children, feel pain due to the depiction of the Grand Witch in The Witches,” he wrote.
“Let me start by saying that I do my best to be sensitive to the feelings and experiences of others, not because of a fear of PC, but because not hurting others seems like a basic level of decency that we should all strive for.” its legend says read more.
The ‘The Intern’ actress then went on to extend her sincerest apologies to the entire community and especially to “children with limb differences.”
“As someone who truly believes in inclusion and truly hates cruelty, I owe you all an apology for the pain caused. Sorry. I didn’t link the limb difference to the GHW when the character’s appearance was brought to me; if I had. I assure you that this would never have happened, ”the 37-year-old actor wrote.
“In particular, I want to say that I feel sorry for children with limb differences: now that I know better, I promise I will do better. And I owe a special apology to all who love him as strongly as I do to my own children: I’m sorry to have disappointed your family, “he added.
Earlier last week, Warner Bros studios had also extended their apologies to the community.
Robert Zemeckis’s direction has been adapted from the classic children’s book Roald Dahl.
‘The Witches’ was released on October 22 on HBO Max, which is Warner Bros.’ sister streaming service. It was previously slated for theatrical release before the coronavirus induced theaters to close in March.
