MagSafe charging limited to 12W on iPhone 12 mini

The iPhone 12 mini cannot recharge up to 15W via MagSafe, Apple support documents reveal, with the compact model restricted to a maximum power delivery level of up to 12W.

When Apple announced the new MagSafe chargers, which provide magnet-assisted wireless charging for the iPhone, it warned that it would deliver up to 15 watts of power delivery to compatible devices, including the iPhone 12 range. While the feature is offered on all models Including iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, function is slightly limited on iPhone 12 mini.

According to the MagSafe support pages, the 15 W figure is true on the larger models, but on the mini, it is restricted to “up to 12 W peak power.” It is not clear exactly why there is a difference in wireless charging power for that particular model, although it is plausible due to the size of the smartphone.

The page also advises that the minimum requirements to reach 12W are slightly different than those required for MagSafe to operate at 15W. While the 15W version needs a charger that runs at 9V / 2.22A or more, 12W instead needs 9V / 2.03 or more.

MagSafe will also work for chargers that provide a 12W minimum, such as 5V / 2.4A, but “will result in a slower charge.”

The MagSafe system uses a series of magnets to perfectly align the charging coils on the disk and the device, improving a problem area of ​​typical wireless charging systems. While it can operate at up to 15W, users will need to connect the MagSafe drive to a charger capable of at least 20W to achieve the maximum figure.
