CustomizeMyPlates Cancels PS5 Faceplate Orders Following ‘Sony Legal Action’

Skin customization company CustomizeMyPlates has been forced to cancel all of its PlayStation 5 skin orders after Sony allegedly threatened legal action against the company.

CustomizeMyPlates revealed their unofficial custom PS5 skins last week and caught the attention of many gamers who were interested in modifying the look of their PS5 consoles. The faceplates have since been removed from the company’s website.

Sony eventually learned of the unauthorized hardware and allegedly threatened legal action against CustomizeMyPlates, leading the company to cancel all faceplate orders, according to a VGC report.

A rendered CustomizeMyPlates said that VGC via email: “Before launch, we did our due diligence and were of the opinion that since Sony only had patents pending on the faceplates, there would be no problem.”

The representative added that the problem started a day after the CustomizeMyPlates website was published, and Sony’s attorneys asked the firm to change its name, which was PlateStation 5, due to trademark infringement.

The following day, Sony’s lawyers had informed the company that “Sony’s intellectual property extended to covers and that if we continued to sell and distribute them in any country, we would end up in court.”

CustomizeMyPlates has had to cancel all orders worldwide and refund all purchases following the threat of legal action from Sony. While the company’s website is still up and running, the company has now switched gears and will instead be selling custom PS5 consoles and DualSense controller skins.

Skins differ from skins in that they do not involve removing the original skins from the PS5, but rather act like a sheet of vinyl that can be added to existing Sony skins for customization.

Sony’s PS5 consoles will launch on November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea, and on November 19 in the United Kingdom and the rest of the world.
