Now-Deleted Leaked Video Shows Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ripping Out PS5 menu to the open world of Manhattan in just 15 seconds. A similar test on PlayStation 4 would take 43 seconds in comparison.
The promise of faster load times has been a major selling point for the PS5. Architect Mark Cerny specifically designed the internal hardware of the PlayStation 5 to avoid as many data bottlenecks as possible.
The PS5 does this primarily by using a custom designed solid state drive or SSD. It is capable of boosting 5.5 GB of raw bandwidth per second. Along with hardware-accelerated decoding, the bandwidth is increased between 8 and 9 GB / s. While even the fastest consumer desktop SSDs can push 5GB / s, the computers lack the PS5’s bespoke design to help data communicate with the rest of the hardware as quickly as possible.
With data being sent so fast, you can actually change the layout of a game. According to Cerny, one of the biggest challenges for developers is trying to fulfill an artistic vision of the limitations of hardware.
“Suppose an enemy is going to yell something while dying, which can be issued as an urgent request for cutoff in front of everyone else, but it is still quite possible that 250 milliseconds are needed to retrieve the data due to all other requests for games and operations in progress, “said Cerny Eurogamer. “Those 250 milliseconds are a problem because if the enemy is going to yell something while dying, it has to happen almost instantly; this type of problem is what forces a large amount of data into RAM on PlayStation 4 and its generation.”
Essentially, Cerny says that for cases where data is needed quickly, those megabytes should be stored in RAM. But RAM is precious, and using some RAM means having to give up something else. Because the PS5’s SSD is incredibly fast, it can, in effect, function almost like RAM.
While the PS5 units have been sent to the reviewers, they are all under strict embargo to show no recording. The person who made this video was able to purchase a PS5 unit earlier through a retailer, or is breaking an NDA.
Twitter user Alejandroid1979 posted an interesting comparison between PS4’s Spider-Man and PS5’s Miles Morales. On PS4, when exiting a mission and returning to the open world of Manhattan, a long loading screen is required. On PS5, Morales can easily launch himself outside, making it appear that the interior of buildings and the city are connected.
