On Saturday, a 45-year-old priest of the Greek Orthodox Church was shot and wounded in the French city of Lyon. The Church, founded in 1929, is located at 45 Rue Père Chevrier in France.
The priest was reportedly shot twice at around 4pm with a sawed-off hunting rifle as he was closing the church. Identified as Nikolaos Kakavelakis, the priest is now being treated for life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the defendant fled the crime scene and his identity has yet to be determined. The victim told emergency services that he did not know the attacker. Unlike other churches, the Greek Orthodox Church did not have security guards.
Police are now investigating whether the attack was related to terrorism. “The gunman shot the priest twice in the stomach and then he ran away,” an investigating officer reported. Later, a suspect was arrested near a kebab shop in Lyon and taken into police custody. However, it was not clear if the suspect in custody was the “real aggressor”. The police registered a case for an attempted murder against unidentified persons.
The beheading of Samuel Paty and calls for a boycott of France
In early October, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Islam is in crisis around the world. He also suggested closing places of worship suspected of radicalization. Just two weeks after his statement, a school teacher, Samuel Paty, was beheaded by a radical Islamist for displaying the Prophet Muhammad cartoon in his class.
Macron strongly condemned the heinous crime, after which Islamic nations began to boycott French products and held protest rallies against France. Radicals are trending on hashtags like #BoycottFrenchProducts and #TwitterSuspendMacron on Twitter and they spread the same hatred of France on other social media platforms. Some of the so-called celebrities like Waqar Zaka also tried to blame Muslim celebrities because they are not boycotting France on their social media.
Three killed by terrorists shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ in Nice
Last week, an Islamic terrorist was reported to have killed three people and injured several in an attack on a church at the Notre Dame church in Nice, France. In the attack, Islamists beheaded two people, including an old woman inside the church. According to local French media, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, has said that the Islamic terrorist did not stop shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ while carrying out the attack.
