Apple released AirPods Pro on October 30, 2019, a year and a day ago. Yesterday (happy first birthday, AirPods Pro!) Apple announced a recall of AirPods Pro that had a manufacturing problem and would replace them for free.
Earlier this year, some AirPods Pro users reported having audio issues with their earbuds, often hearing a crackle when using the earbuds.
The recall is designed to replace AirPods Pro that are demonstrating this issue along with a few other issues including static noise that increases in noisy environments. Apple says this could happen, “with exercise or while talking on the phone.”
One of the standout features of AirPods Pro is Active Noise Cancellation, which brilliantly removes noise from the outside world so all you hear is music. Apple’s noise-canceling capabilities on AirPods Pro are exceptionally good.
However, some AirPods Pro users have also reported problems with noise cancellation. This is also covered by recovery and refers to the loss of bass sounds or intrusive background sounds, “such as street or airplane noise,” as Apple describes it.
Apple says that the newer AirPods Pro, those manufactured as of October 2020, do not have these issues, so they are not covered by the recall. Similarly, the recall only applies to the AirPods Pro earbuds, not the charging case.
If you are affected, this is how the withdrawal works. You can make an appointment at an Apple Store, contact Apple Support, or find an authorized service provider.
Apple says: “Your AirPods Pro will be tested before any service to verify that they are eligible for this program. AirPods Pro (left, right, or both) with a confirmed problem will be replaced. “
In other words, if after the exam no problem is found, the headphones will not be replaced.
I would just add that we don’t know how prevalent this problem is. I have never experienced any of the problems, nor have I met anyone who has. However, that doesn’t take away from how annoying it must be for anyone who has endured them, for whom this service program, as Apple calls the recall, will be welcome.
