Halloween is the time of year when people like to be a little scary. Your home may already be adorned with ghosts and skeletons, but Google’s 3D augmented reality (AR) objects can take it to the next level.

You may not know it, but Google Search has the ability to place 3D objects in your environment through augmented reality. This feature does not require any special application, it simply works from the browser of your iPhone, iPad or Android device.

3D objects include dinosaurs, a wide variety of animals, planets, and various other things. Google also includes a handful of items specifically for Halloween:

  • Ghost
  • Dancing skeleton
  • Jack-o’-lanterns
  • Dog dressed up as a hot dog
  • Dog dressed as a pirate
  • Cat with witch hat

To put these creepy (and silly) objects into your world, you can use the Google app (iPhone, iPad, or Android) or the Google website in a mobile browser like Chrome.

Objects can be found by searching for them. Terms you can use include “Halloween”, “Jack-o-lantern”, “human skeleton”, “cat”, “dog” and “German shepherd”.

Next, after searching for your desired AR Halloween character, scroll down the main results tab and find the 3D object card. Touch “View in 3D” to view the object in full screen.

tap view in 3D

From here you can move the object around the screen with your fingers, as well as pinch in and out to resize the 3D character. To put it in your real world environment, tap “View in your space”.

You will see a prompt to move your phone to help AR technology analyze space and determine how much space is available. Then the object will appear. You can move the Halloween object and scale it with your fingers.

Tap the camera shutter button in the center of the screen to take a photo.

Drag the card to open it from the bottom of the screen to view Halloween related items. Touch one to place it on your phone screen.

That’s all about it! Go ahead and add some spooky Halloween 3D AR from Google to your world.
