Users evaluating the latest beta versions of iOS 14 and iPadOS run into an apparent error telling them to download a new version of the software, even though that update does not exist.
Several beta testers are seeing incessant requests to upgrade from iOS 14 beta despite running the most up-to-date version, according to reports on Twitter, Reddit, and other social media outlets.
“A new iOS update is now available. Please update from iOS 14 beta,” the pop-up says.
If you select “Close”, the notification will be disabled, at least for a short period of time. Some users report that the alert reappears when unlocking the iPhone or visiting the Notification Center. Apple has not commented on the matter, although current beta versions are supposed to include a faulty expiration date.
The problem has been sporadic in recent weeks, but has apparently increased in intensity today.
Beta testers faced an identical situation in 2018 with beta variants of iOS 12. That situation was caused by an apparent coding error that assigned the current beta versions an incorrect expiration date. By reading the expiration date as valid, the operating system would automatically prompt users to download a newer version.
With the beta version of iOS 12, users found a solution by disabling automatic time setting and turning back their phone’s internal clock. It is unknown if the drastic technique works with the iOS 14 beta bug.
